Often times, people refer to our stock as "Oreo Cows". While this might be a fun name for them, the proper name of the breed is Belted Galloway. Originally from Scotland, these beef cattle were introduced to the United States back in the 1950's. Belted Galloways have a unique appearance, with common variations such as black, red and dun sandwiching a white middle, or belt.

Affectionately called "Belties" by breeders, these animals have a very strong will to survive and have an exceptionally long life span. Many cows remain productive even past their teen years. The Belted Galloway is considered to be a medium-sized breed with mature bulls weighing between 1800 and 2000 pounds on average, and around 1000 to 1200 pounds for mature females. Due to their moderate size, gentle dispostion, easy calving and good mothering, Belties are well-suited for novice cattlemen and beginning showmen.

In 2006, Wayne Beck became fond of the Belted Galloway, prompting the experienced rancher to purchase his first small herd. Since then, the group has expanded to over 25 animals. Our family absolutely loves our Belties and look forward to seeing them grazing in our pastures for many years to come!

As of December 2009, Mr. Beck had his first steer butchered. Two of the prime roasts were cooked for Christmas dinner. The meat was delicious! The rest is in the freezer ready to be made into tacos!
